3 TYPES of Training for the Teach-With-Stories Method™

1. De Madre A Madre Prenatal Education Training Program

TWS Method™ PLUS the De Madre A Madre Photonovels

Our experience developing and testing the Teach-With-Stories Method in a variety of communities and practice settings has taught us many strategies to launch and maintain a successful De Madre A Madre Prenatal Program for Latinas. Together, we are discovering creative partnerships and innovative ways to share resources.

While we continue to research and develop additional training program components, it is possible to begin now.

Where to start?
Here's the training and support we recommend for starting a De Madre A Madre Prenatal Program.

Recommended Components:
     1)   Interactive Train-The-Trainer workshop (1 day)
     2) Telephone support and/or on-site coaching
     3)  At least 2-3 'practice' sessions for new facilitators
          (will depend on level of experience and background of new facilitators)

Objectives

Introduce, model, and practice facilitation skills

Strengthen organizational and community networks to successfully launch and sustain the program

Intended Audience*
Bilingual program facilitators, key prenatal care staff (e.g. those involved in supervision or referral), other key stakeholders in community or referring agencies, potential collaborators or funders

*Currently, the training is only available in English and the written materials are designed for those with higher literacy levels. We are seeking funding for research and development of a bilingual, lay educator TWS training program.

Materials

Train-the-Trainer manuals include:

A full series of 7 bilingual photonovels and 7 facilitator guides (English only)
Program start-up and logistical guidelines (incorporates lessons learned from field-testing)
Forms (e.g., attendance form, sample agendas, sample pre-post test)
Evaluation plan: conceptual model with proposed measurements
Participant handouts, including guidelines for effective facilitation and follow up activities for literacy instruction
Additional bilingual prenatal care educational resources (books, articles, videos, etc)

Participant handouts (for community member participants)

Cost: Will vary according to level of customization and technical assistance desired.

2) Teach-With-Stories Education Programs/Presentations

Want to raise awareness of the value of participatory approaches and how they differ from traditional, didactic approaches?

We can design and deliver participatory-based educational sessions and presentations for your target audience(s).

3) Teach-With-Stories Facilitator Training Programs

Want to apply the TWS Method™ to an area other than prenatal education?

We can brainstorm ideas for adapting the Teach-With-Stories Method for other health topics or for developing an educational curriculum that incorporates the TWS Method™.

Interested in learning how to implement participatory education approaches like the TWS Method™?
